Comedy Heroes
There have been loads of lists of the best comedians ever on TV and in the newspapers, detailing the best jokes and showing clips of a comedy show. It can be difficult to think through all the great comedy acts we’ve seen over the decades and pick out who is the very best. In fact, it’s probably totally impossible. All we can do is pick our own particular and very personal favourites.
For me, the best comedian ever is actually the best comedians ever, plural. Morecambe and Wise were a huge part of my childhood; their TV show was massively popular amongst all my family and friends – and the rest of the country to be honest! Everyone would always say that Eric Morecambe was the funny one (and maybe they were a little bit right) but a lot of his humour wouldn’t have worked, or at least wouldn’t have been half as funny, without the straight man Ernie. I sometimes look at my little girl sitting in her Phil and Ted’s Explorer whilst watching TV and think it’s a shame that she’s unlikely to experience such comedy greatness in her childhood. Comedians today just don’t have the same sense of fun.
When I think back to all the great comic moments I remember from my youth, a lot of them were in that show. Angela Rippon emerging from behind the newsdesk to do a high-kicking dance routine has become an iconic clip, as has their wonderfully choreographed breakfast scene, set to “The Stripper”. I always used to love the little asides that Eric made to the camera and I would spend hours practising his paper bag trick myself!
There were a lot of comedy double acts who came later and tried to copy their style, with some success. The Two Ronnnies, who I think maybe started while Morecambe and Wise were still going, probably came the closes to making me laugh (thought I always much preferred Ronnie Barker and adored his work in sitcoms). But none of the Saturday night comedy duos that tried to replace Morecambe and Wise ever quite made it work as well as them. I’m not sure what the reality TV audiences of today would make of them, but I loved their shows.
